Anita Krishan - the visionary contemporary novelist!

Anita Krishan, the author in the buzz these days who has penned more than five novels, is said to be the one who will take ahead the great legacy of the celebrated classic Indian novelists who famed Indian English fiction on the world stage - R. K. Narayan, Anand, Anita Desai, Arundhati Roy and likes of Amitav Ghosh. The present-day popular novelist Anita Krishan was born and raised in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. She was educated in the same city and after her masters in English Literature, she took the teaching job and began teaching literature to her students at a senior level. Even before she took on teaching, the writer in Anita drew her attention to poetry writing and it developed in her throughout. She has also written and directed plays during her career as a senior teacher.

Currently residing in Gurugram, Anita Krishan began her writing career after taking a retirement from her teaching. After that, she has devoted herself to serious fiction writing and her works have received tremendous reception from the readers as well as the book critics. Among her most known works, Despite Stolen Dreams and Tears of Jhelum are widely popular. These two novels form a series on terrorism in Kashmir and trace the family of a Kashmiri person named Wali.

Other novels by Anita are Fluffy and Me, The Burning Orchard, Running Up the Hill. Her novels are known for the rich language and wider themes which communicate to the readers in a much broader way than the contemporary fiction which is being relentlessly produced these days. She believes that literature should be for a purpose and not just for momentary entertainment. Moreover, her works always balance the seamy side with the brighter side because, at the end of the day, it is hope which lets us survive and thrive and dare to strive again. Despite Stolen Dreams and Tears of Jhelum are perfect examples which testify these arguments with regards to the writings of Anita Krishan!

Writers like Anita are the need of the hour because serious readers are restless reading the same stuff again and again and if they don't find a serious lot of works to read, there are high chances that reading habits will decline! The difference between a serious literary fiction and a mere play of words can evidently be seen when you read Anita Krishan's work and then read a cheaply written piece of entertaining literature - you will see yourself.
